Ma'am Marifel's honey washed catimor variety has a complex and intriguing flavor profile with fruity citrusy notes reminiscent of orange or pears and a full-bodied flavor notes of dark chocolate and hints of sweet bell peppers.

Ma'am Marifel is an active member of the Balutakay Coffee Farmers Association (BACOFA) cooperative in Davao Del Sur, Philippines. She is a vegetable farmer who also grows potatoes and Arabica Catimor coffee on her farm at 1490 meters above sea level. Ma'am Marifel has implemented best practices from training sessions with the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Trade and Industry, including rejuvenating her farm by cutting down old and unproductive trees.

About the Producer

Several coffees from this women-run coffee cooperative in Southern Philippines consistently top the list in national quality competitions. This year was no exception with this group claiming 4 spots in the top 6, including #1! This micro-lot grown by Ma'am Marifel of Davao Del sur placed 4th in the competition.

BACOFA Coffee Cooperative

BACOFA was established in 2013 and currently has 150 members who are required to have at least 50 coffee trees and attend regular meetings and activities while making share capital contributions. The cooperative provides members with access to training with government agencies, NGOs, and researchers, and marketing green coffee beans. BACOFA also processes special coffee lots at its processing center, which includes raised drying beds, de-pulper, and huller machines. The coop hires 15 people for sorting, usually women, who are known for their meticulous attention to detail.

Through BACOFA, Ma'am Marifel has increased her household income, which has helped her provide for her family and invest in a new home. BACOFA has also had a positive impact on the community, empowering women, revitalizing rural culture, and promoting environmental sustainability. The cooperative partners with other coops to grow the coffee industry regionally, and farmers can earn enough to support themselves and their families without having to move to the city or overseas.
