This special micro-lot from the indigenous communities of the Cordillera Mountains in the Northern Philippines is gaining international recognition; praised for its sweetness and flavor notes of brown sugar, coconut, currant. Ma'am Shirley Palao-ay of Benguet Province placed 7th in the 2021 Philippine Coffee Quality Competition for this coffee, which is grown with care, using a screened cloth to ensure cooler shade and a slower, more thorough fruit ripening. 

Ma'am Shirley - Cordillera Mountains is a unique coffee crafted from Bourbon variety beans, originally introduced to La Reunion by French missionaries in the 1700s, from Yemen. For 150 years, bourbon was cultivated exclusively on this island in the Indian Ocean. In the mid-1800s, the plant was spread to Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific as colonial ambitions grew. In the early 1900s, Brazilian breeders selected the best-performing plants from the natural mutation of the Bourbon variety, the Caturra, and propagated their seeds.

Ma'am Shirley shared that to produce a premium quality of coffee, one must be meticulous throughout the production process, from picking the best berries up to roasting the beans.

We ship by the US postal service and find that our packages arrive in 2-3 days from when they are shipped. We ship within 48 hours of receipt of an order not counting weekends. We charge actual shipping rates of the US Postal service, however, for orders over $50, shipping is free.

Returns and Refunds:

Can I get a refund?
We truly expect you to enjoy our product, however, if you are dissatisfied for any reason, here is what you do. Because we roast to order, the following rules apply:

If you are not pleased with the product, you must notify us within 21 days of receipt of your order.

  • We will be happy to refund the cost of your purchase, or replace with an equivalent product. To receive a refund or replacement, unused portions of coffees must be returned.
  • Shipping costs will be refunded at the original cost to ship to you.
  • If the product is deficient, bag is broken, etc. we’ll get you a new one.
  • To request a return, please contact us at info@boondocksroasters, including your order date, name on the order and which coffee(s) you would like to return and why.

What happens if my package is never delivered or is returned to you?

If your package has gone missing or has been returned to us, please contact us and we will do our best to resolve the issue in the most appropriate manner possible.

We have no way of knowing about these issues unless we are notified and we are more than willing to work toward a mutually beneficial solution when these errors occur.  If you provided an incorrect address we will charge you to reship your order.

About the Producer: Shirley Palao-ay is the president of the Tuba Benguet Coffee Growers Association or TuBengCoGA, was organized in 2007 which initially only had 30 members, now TuBenCoGa comprised of 115 members. Its aim is to develop the coffee industry in Tuba town. According to Shirley, in producing their aromatic coffee, the organization shifted from their old-style method to a modern processing system.

From Philippine Coffee Board:

The Tuba Benguet Coffee Growers Association (TUBENCOGA) was organized in 2007 with only 35 members. Now, the community has 129 members—95 of whom are women.

Shirley Ignacio Palao-ay—who has been a coffee farmer since 2010—is the chairperson of TUBENCOGA. “People need to plant 50 seedlings before they become members,” she shares.

In 2012, propelled by her desire to improve the quality of her coffee, Shirley signed up for a class about packaging and technology. She shared what she learned with her community. The result was coffee with better quality and higher yield.

“It all starts with a seed, so make sure you select the good ones. Visit your trees not just during harvest time. By doing so, you are able to prevent pests. Clean it regularly and put compost. These will ensure more cherries. When they bloom, pick the ones in the middle,” reveals Shirley.

When I asked about their women members, Shirley beamed with pride because they are the active pickers. They are more diligent. “There’s something about picking red coffee cherries. It relieves stress,” she says with a laugh. TUBENCOGA applies wet and semi-wet processing. The members meet every 15th of the month to make sure these best practices are discussed and constantly applied.

Shirley’s lifelong commitment to farming coffee has, indeed, borne fruit in every sense. She and Dr. Val Macanes—her mentor in the packaging and technology class in 2012—were proclaimed by CQI’s international cuppers as two of the top ten producers of quality Philippine Arabica coffee in the recent Kape Pilipino Green Coffee Quality Grading Competition. Dr. Val ranked second and his student ranked eighth.

This natural coffee is brought to you by 12 farmer families, and all of their hard work and labor is evident in the cup.
