Costa Morena Reserve

$22.00

Costa Morena Reserve is a transnational blend rooted in connection—between origins, people, and purpose. This coffee brings together two regions with deep agricultural histories: the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, and Brazil’s Serra Negra, each contributing balance, structure, and sweetness to the cup.

In the brew, you’ll find a familiar cocoa backbone, gentle tartness, and a maple-like sweetness that lingers. It’s steady, comforting, and versatile—built for daily drinking, but layered enough to slow you down.

Chiapas, Mexico — CESMACH Women Producers

This portion of the blend comes from women smallholder farmers of the CESMACH cooperative in Chiapas. What began in 2005 as a small grassroots effort by six women advocating for education, equity, and recognition within the co-op has grown into a powerful women-led producer group.

Today, more than 200 women contribute to these lots, farming small plots—often under four hectares—across 32 communities. Their coffees are sold under the Café Femenino program, ensuring separation, traceability, and a price premium that directly supports women producers, many of whom are single parents or primary providers for their families.

Premiums from this program have funded vegetable gardens, women’s health initiatives, and preventative care programs in partnership with Grounds for Health—impact that extends well beyond coffee. All farms are shade-grown within the buffer zone of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, one of the most biodiverse cloud forests in the world.

Serra Negra, Brazil — Fazenda Cruzeiro

From Brazil, Costa Morena Reserve features coffee from Fazenda Cruzeiro, owned by Ivan Junqueira Ribeiro and established in 1923. Located in the Campo das Vertentes region, the farm combines long-standing tradition with modern, sustainable practices.

Cherries are harvested at peak ripeness using both manual and mechanical methods, then patio-dried to develop clarity and sweetness. The result is a structured, chocolate-forward cup that anchors the blend.

This coffee is sourced through Sancoffee, a certified B Corp and specialty cooperative known for championing quality, transparency, and long-term relationships between growers and roasters.

Santo Antonio do Amparo, Campo das Vertentes

This coffee comes to us from producer Ivan Junqueira Ribeiro, owner of Fazenda Cruzeiro, a farm in Brazil's Campo das Vertentes region. The farm, established in 1923, spans a total of 1,021 hectares of which 381 are planted in Red Catuai, Yellow Bourbon, Mundo Novo, Topázio, Arara, and Rubi. Cherries here are picked ripe using both mechanical and manual harvesting techniques.  After harvesting, cherries are moved to a cement patio for drying.

CESMACH Women Led Co-Op

In 2005, a group of six women farmers from the CESMACH co-op formed an alliance to involve more women in coffee cultivation workshops and recognize their contributions to farm management. They wanted to empower these women who were running their own farms while their husbands were listed as CESMACH members on paper.

By 2006, the group grew to 23 women who officially joined CESMACH, selling their coffee as "Café Feminino" to signify it was produced by women. This initiative supports single mothers who often provide for their families.

The CESMACH Women Producer program started in 2012, with 32 communities represented by these women. The premium earned from their coffee sales was used to build vegetable gardens and later invested in women's health programs, including cervical cancer prevention and examinations for over 500 women in partnership with Grounds For Health.

Today, the co-op has 224 women members, including widows and private landowners, and one woman producer holds a position on CESMACH's board of directors. This progress is significant in Mexico, where gender equality has been traditionally challenging. The CESMACH Women Producers not only focus on producing coffee grown by women but also adhere to CESMACH's quality standards.

We are proud to share the CESMACH Women's Producer coffee harvest.
